Car wash POS hardware: what you need, what you don't

The software runs in a browser, so most washes start with a tablet they already own. Here is the full kit list, which parts are optional, and the bits that come from your processor or camera vendor.

The kit, piece by piece

Required

Tablet, PC or phone

Any device with a current browser: Windows or Mac PCs, Android tablets, iPads, Chromebooks and phones. Use a tablet stand at the pay station and a phone for the lane.

A 10-inch or larger tablet is comfortable for wash buttons.

Required for cards

Card reader

Comes from the payment processor you choose; it must be one your processor supports with GetCarWashPOS in your country.

Ask on your demo which processors and readers are supported where you are.

Optional

Receipt printer

80 mm thermal receipt printers (USB, network or Bluetooth) work through browser printing; common models include the Epson TM-T20 and Star Micronics TSP100 series.

Many members never want a receipt — set receipts to "ask" to save paper.

If you take cash

Cash drawer

A standard drawer that opens from the receipt printer's kick port when a cash sale prints.

Count the drawer at every shift change; the register close report does the maths.

For retail items

Barcode scanner

USB or Bluetooth scanners that type like a keyboard work out of the box for air fresheners, towels and other retail.

Print your own barcode labels for products that do not have one.

Optional (Tunnel and up)

LPR camera

Bought from a licence-plate recognition vendor that can send plate reads to an outside system; connected through an integration.

Position matters more than resolution: angle, distance and lighting decide read rates.

Optional

Label printer

For printing barcode labels for retail products; standard thermal label printers work through the label print screen.

Only needed if you stock retail without manufacturer barcodes.

Required

Internet and backup

The POS is hosted, so the selling device needs internet. Keep a mobile-data hotspot as backup, and a UPS where power cuts happen.

In Pakistan, put the router and tablet on a UPS for load-shedding.

Hardware questions

What hardware does a car wash POS need?

At minimum a tablet or PC with a browser and internet. Add a card reader from your processor for cards, a receipt printer and cash drawer if you take cash, a barcode scanner for retail, and an LPR camera if you want members recognised by plate.

Do you sell hardware?

No. Buy hardware from your usual supplier, and card readers from your processor; we tell you on your demo what works for your setup.

Will it work on an iPad?

Yes. The POS runs in Safari or Chrome on an iPad, as on any tablet.

Can I use my existing receipt printer?

Most 80 mm thermal receipt printers work through browser printing. Test yours during the trial.

Which LPR cameras work?

Any LPR vendor that can send plate reads to an outside system by API or webhook can be connected. Ask on your demo which vendors we have already connected.

Do I need a kiosk or pay station?

Not to start. Attended pay stations work with a tablet. Unattended kiosks need kiosk hardware from a vendor and an integration; ask on your demo.

What if the internet goes down?

The POS needs internet to save sales. Keep a mobile-data hotspot ready and, where power cuts are common, a UPS for the router and tablet.

How many devices can I use?

Bay includes 2 registers, Tunnel and Network 4 per location; extra registers are $15/mo each. Owners can log in from any number of devices to read reports.

Start on the tablet you already have

Open the trial on any tablet or PC, run a test sale, and print a test receipt. If something doesn't work, the desk for your country will tell you what will.
